GESTURES

There are four different types of gestures used with the Quadjoy system; AIR (Puff & Sip), EDGE, INDEPENDENT, and EXTERNAL. A gesture is how the user makes a request. A gesture is linked to a single or multiple actions. We will discuss actions later.

Sip&Puff

The number of  sip & puff gestures available is programmable. The “Gestures per Mode” control allows 2,4,8,or 12 gestures. (Gesture count and assigned actions are set on the Action tab of the QuadLIFE App.) The higher the gesture number the more difficult it is to perform. We do not suggest programming the QuadJoy to be more difficult to use than necessary. The default setting is 4 gestures which are normally assigned are: G1 (Abrupt Puff)=Right button, G2 (Abrupt Sip)=Left button, G3 (Slow Puff)=Mouse wheel activate (then Sip or Puff to Scroll the screen up or down, and G4 (Slow Sip) which toggles the On-Screen keyboard in Windows 10. The Sip & Puff and External gestures are dependent on the operating mode and can be programmed uniquely to each of the 4 modes of operation : Mouse-1, Mouse-2, Smart TV and Joystick. The easiest way to perform a “Slow” sip or  puff is to slowly apply pressure until the Blue LED illuminates, then increase the pressure until the LED turns Green

Edge

The Edge gesture by default is used to change where the QuadJoy output is directed. If the user holds the stick either Up, Down, Left or Right past the “Edge Gesture Threshold” for a time period exceeding the “Edge Gesture Time” a white LED will illuminate under the stick. Then release the stick allowing it to return to the neutral position, and when the white LED turns off the programmed function will occur. If your QuadJoy is configured as a “Home” unit: Up will connect to a USB device, Left will connect to Bluetooth-1, Right will connect to Bluetooth-2 and Down will cause the QuadJoy to RESET - ReZero and restart connected to the USB device. All of these settings can be changed with the QuadLIFE App.

Independent Gesture

The QuadJoy allows the ability to control devices other than a computer's cursor. The independent gesture system can be configured with the QuadLIFE App from the Action tab. (Note the Independent Gesture option must be checked to function) Push the stick to either Up, Down, Left, or Right. Then either Sip or Puff. If your QuadJoy is configured as a “Home” device the Sip and Puff system will be set to 4 gestures. The Independent Gesture system can cause as many as 32 different actions.

Push Stick Up (Stick LED illuminates Green)

  1. Sip and release suction (LEDs 6-10 illuminate Blue, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

  2. Puff and release suction (LEDs 1-5 illuminate Blue, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

Push Stick Down (Stick LED illuminates Green)

  1. Sip and release suction (LEDs 6-10 illuminate Red, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

  2. Puff and release suction (LEDs 1-5 illuminate Red, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

Push Stick Left (Stick LED illuminates Green)

  1. Sip and release suction (LEDs 6-10 illuminate Blue-Green, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

  2. Puff and release suction (LEDs 1-5 illuminate Blue-Green, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

Push Stick Right (Stick LED illuminates Green)

  1. Sip and release suction (LEDs 6-10 illuminate Green, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

  2. Puff and release suction (LEDs 1-5 illuminate Green, Stick LED Blue)

    1. G1 (Fast Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    2. G2 (Fast Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

    3. G3 (Slow Puff) programmed action(s) occurs

    4. G4 (Slow Sip) programmed action(s) occurs

As long as the stick has not returned to the neutral position the LEDs will remain lit, and the available puff & sip gestures will cause the programmed actions.. If the stick remains in the neutral position longer than the “Extended Gesture Reset Time” the extended gesture system will reset and return to normal cursor movement. NOTE while the extended gesture system is active the Nurse Call action will NOT work.

External Gesture

An external gesture is triggered by a momentary switch functioned by any movement a user is capable of. There are multiple options to connect the switch to the QuadJoy. The external jack option allows up to three switches to be connected. The Wheelchair Powered option allows your QuadJoy to be powered from your wheel chair’s batteries. This device also allows you to connect up to three external switches. The jacks are standard 1/8” audio jacks, colored Pink, Blue, and Green. The external jack gestures can be uniquely programmed for each mode of operation. (Mouse-1, Mouse-2, Smart TV, or Joystick) This allows a single switch to step through the available operating modes. An external jack gesture can be programmed to cause any action or group of actions.

Actions

The Actions Tab of the QuadLIFE Appshows the following types of Actions:
